Today's News poll applies this question to various possible 1972 U.S. presidential nominee combinations. It pits President Nixon against each of six potential Democratic nominees, with Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace as a third party candidate in each case. Besides measuring the response by such groupings as area, occupa- tion, income and education, the poll also tests the reaction today of those trends polled aquinst how they voted in some key past elections. For example, under the heading "1963 presidential vote," the poll shows how many of those vot for Mr. Nixon in 1968 would vote for him today and how many would vote for another nominee or are undecided. Similarly it shows the corresponding response from those who voted for Humphrey or Wallace in 1903.
