MEMORANDUM FOR:
HOWARD COHEN
FROM:
CHARLES COLSON
Please get together with Ken Rietz and tell me what we
are doing to exploit the Graham "Godstock" festival. We
have simply got to get more closely identified with Graham's
effort. He wants to help. Haldeman is the only one who
can talk to him, but our people should be planning how to
make maximum use of Graham's organization.
Be certain to give me a report on this. Don't let this one
slide.

Phillips noted the Graham "Godstock" festival, the religious songs
on the Top Tunes and the surging growth of membership of the
fundamentalist churches. A new book says there are 30M evangelicals of
voting age and Billy Graham is the leader of this "politically decisive
majority. 11 W/McG's cause "closely identified w/most of the social
issues an athema to evangelicals and fundamentalists, 11 and Graham's
close relationship w/RN, "the Nov. impact of the new revivalism
could be immense. 11
Hodgson said many union and other workers will vote for RN
because they are disenchanted with Dem Libs, expecially McG.
He told UPI that "such things as unlimited busing, unlimited amnesty,
unlimited pot smoking. The worker is concerned about his home
and his family and for this reason, these things hold no particular
attraction for him. If UPI says that McG has not advocated such moves
and the report says the Secy. "evaded a direct answer as to whether
he and RN were trying to drive a wedge between organized labor and
the Dems by exploiting the reluctance of union leaders to support McG."
But he said the fears Meany and other key union leaders have about
McG's calls for immediate withdrawal from VN and DOD cuts could
very well outweigh their opposition to RN's economic policies. The

suggestion that labor leaders may feel what they regard as RN's
damage to the economy can be repaired after Nixon is gone, but any
damage done by McG's foreign policy and defense proposals would be
permanent.
