Dear Congressman Erlenborn:
Thank you for your letter of August 14th which
has found its way to me here in San Clemente.
I know that Bryce Harlow and the Comptroller
General have had a number of conversations about
filling the position of Assistant Comptroller
General of the United States.
It is my understanding that some agreement has been
reached and I am forwarding your letter to Bryce
with the expectation that he can give you a more
definite answer than I can.
However, I am also sending copies of your letter to
Peter Flanigan and Harry Flemming with the expectation
that it will be given attention should the position still
be open.

Dear Mr. Ehrlichman:
In March, I joined several of my colleagues on the
House Government Operations Committee in forwarding endorse-
ments of William H. Copenhaver, minority counsel for the
Committee, for the position of Assistant Comptroller General
of the United States.
Shortly afterwards, we were given to understand that
another employee of the House of Representatives had been se-
lected for this position, and we relaxed our efforts in behalf
of Mr. Copenhaver. Recently, however, it has come to our at-
tention that the position remains open. I am writing, there-
fore, to urge consideration of Mr. Copenhaver.
In any event, it is hoped that the opinions of Repub-
licans on the Government Operations Committee will be given
weighted consideration in filling this vacancy. The General
Accounting Office is an arm of Congress, and the Government
Operations Committee works closely with it. Consequently, it
seems highly desirable to me that there be the utmost mutual
confidence between the people at the GAO and the members of
the Committee.
I would appreciate your early reply.
