And
May 25, 1971
Dover-Foxcroft, Maine
Dear Mr. President:
THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
I am writing this letter in reference to the news reports that you
say the economy is improving.
Maybe things are better for the government, big business, the
\rich, retired and maybe even the middle class. But what about
the poor yet not of the middle class.
I am asking you to forget foreign affairs, politics, big business
Off
the rich and all others for a few moments.
Try to place yourself in the shoes of a working class citizen in
a small town located in the center of a small state way up in the
northeastern part of our country.
As you can see on any map, we are away from all the big indus-
trial marketing areas. We have no large industries and real big
business here. Most companies around here employ about 100 persons
at the most.
Up until Dec. 1970 the town of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine had work
for those who wanted it. At that time however, because of foreign
imports of cheap or imitation leather goods which could be sold at
very low prices, because of high freight costs, because of pollution laws
and many other problems I do not know much about, Maine Leathers (sic)
informed everyone they were going to close their doors for good.
