Meeting with Louis Harris
October 13, 1971

I. PURPOSE
THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
To discuss Harris' current polls and his trip to the Soviet Union.
II.
BACKGROUND, PARTICIPANTS AND PRESS PLAN
1.
Background: As you know, Harris has in recent months
become increasingly supportive. On one occasion, for
example, a poll was distributed while Harris was in the
Soviet Union, which I thought was unduly negative. I
called Harris upon his return and he immediately killed
the paragraph (and as a result the poll) by having his
syndicate call all newspaper subscribers. He has, as you
know, also provided me with a great deal of private infor-
mation about his polling activities, the results and incidental
political intelligence.
Harris is very impressed with his new found "respectability".
Donaldson-Lufkin took him in as an equal; this had enormous
impact on Harris -- the poor Jewish boy making good in the
New York power structure. He has been very susceptible to
our blandishments, has a huge ego and his developing relation-
ship with you (especially your phone call to him two months
ago) has had a very perceptible effect.

3. Press Plan: None, meeting is not announced; Ollie Atkins will
come in during the meeting to take quick candid shots. (There
should not be a formal picture at the outset.)
