REMARKS OF THE PRESIDENT
TO TOP BUSINESSMEN
STATE DINING ROOM
9:30 P.M. EST
Well, gentlemen, you have been exposed, I under-
stand from the people who I have been talking to at our
table, to a great deal of discussion today of our policies --
our domestic policies and also our foreign policies. I was
trying to find out what you had heard, to see whether there
was anything left for me to cover, and I find out there is
very little, so what I will try to do is to perhaps put it
somewhat in perspective of the whole global scene as I see
it now, and also in terms of the various pieces that you have
seen, by bringing it all together in one place.
Before doing so, I would like to say a word about
the people in this room. Needless to say, it is a very dis-
tinguished group. All groups that come to this room are dis-
tinguished. Most of you have been here before. Maury Stans,
as we were walking down after shaking hands, was telling me
how much you had helped during the campaign, and I was
reminded of what Theodore Roosevelt once said in talking
about contributions to political campaisn. He said, "What
mattered was not the size, but the motive." I like your
motives, but I liked your size, too. (Laughter)
In fact, I saw a great friend of many of ours around
here, Billy Graham, a couple of days ago, and showed him the
guest list for these two dinners. He said, "Do me a favor.
Invite them to a church service and let me pass the plate."
(Laughter)
The only difference there, that would be much easier
for you. You could deduct that, but you couldn't deduct this.
But in speaking of gratefulness to you, I also want
to express gratefulness to those who served as members of our
Finance Committee. It is a thankless job, and there are
chairmen from various parts of the country here who were
chairmen of committees, and who, in addition, contributed.
So I will not mention any one of you individually, except to
mention the man who headed it all up.
