U.S. News features excerpts from Sen. Long's speech charging
cheating and mismanagement are inflating welfare costs. Long says
the welfare system and HR 1 condone and encourage such actions and
that Cong. has responsibility to correct short-comings by whatever
means it takes to assure honest administration of the program.
NBC noted Senate Finance voted unanimously to increase Social
Security benefits so that everyone who's worked 30 years will receive
at least $200/month with $300 going to married couples. Long said
the increase should help reduce the welfare rolls.
DRUGS
Justice's Ambrose said the dept. will ask $2. 3M to finance its
33 city drive to disrupt heroin traffic. UPI notes program efforts
already underway in NYC
Ambrose said the new anti-heroin
crusade represents an approach not tried before -- disrupting heroin
traffic at the local level.
In its 6-page cover article on drug abuse, U.S. News features
an interview with Ambrose on how the nationwide crackdown on heroin
peddlers will work. He, pointing out the US is in the midst of an
epidemic of hard-drug usage of which black victims are a "very
substantial" percentage, says RN has personally mounted a campaign
involving all facets of gov't. to do something about the problem.
U.S. News also outlines increasing internatl. support of US drive on
drug traffic.
Kleindienst said he believes marijuana is harmful and will not be
legalized.
In its lead note Time notes RN's "bad time with special-study
commissions - - they keep recommending things he doesn't approve
of. 11

legalization.
