Major Stories of Day:
All nets with film (NBC/CBS lead) on guilty verdict for would-be
Wallace assassin Bremer. Deliberating 1 hour-35 min,, the jury
also rejected defense pleas of insanity, and Bremer was sentenced
to 63 years in prison. Bremer, recalling a prosecution statement
that society must be saved from people like himself, said "in my
defense, I surely would have liked it if society had protected me
from myself. That's all I've got. to say. :1 Judge Powers dropped
4 more charges against Bremer, including assault and battery
charges on Wallace and Secret Service agent Zarvos
Near tears,
Bremer's father on NBC/CBS film couldn't understand how the
verdict could be termed justice, as "there could be only one decision,
the boy was sick. " NBC, noting Bremer still faces Federal charges,
said Justice may forego prosecution because of long sentence by
Maryland.
ABC led (#2 story on NRC/CBS) that McG offered Murskie the VP
spot. No official announcement, but aides in both camps confirm
story. Muskie's in Maine, apparently to discuss it with his wife,
who reportedly has "reservations" about Big Ed running for Veep
again. McG (CBS film, noted by other nets) had "no comment"
on the offer
Word from Muskie isn't expected til the weekend.

McG continues to get union support the hard way -- piece-by-piece --
said NBC's Utley, in lead into report (noted by CBS) that the
Communications Workers endorsed McG, and ABC has film clip
of Admin's Balzano assessing value of endorsements.
All nets noted "biggest increase in 5 mos. in wholesale food prices --
up 3. 2% in July -- and that unemployment held steady at 5. 5% (same
as June's rate and lowest rate since Oct. '70)
Ziegler said the
Admin is "quite pleased" with the economy's course as indicators
point to good economic expansion and slowing inflation.
All nets noted EMK & Co-sponsored resolution on dikes, and EMK
accusation the Admin policy was one of a "deliberate if not calculated,
policy of bombing" NVN dikes. On CBS, Kennedy said the US policy
