THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
The major stories of the day:
- - Shriver is headed for easy approval by the DNC altho that body is
again afflicted w/Credentials Challenges w/Ohio's Frank King in
center of controversy. ABC/CBS led w/the remaining wounds also
featured by NBC. Positive remarks on Shriver from Smith/Sevareid.
Noted by all nets was unanimous endorsement of Shriver by House
Dems and Daley's positive remarks as well on McG's choice.
McG on all nets making his 1st post-convention speech to a union
as he, in text advance, sharply attacked RN.
MacGregor on
CBS saying there 'd be no tax rise under RN.
ABC feature on
softer Wall St. reaction to McG tho most still don't expect him
to win, they're hedging their bets
NBC led with Cambodian fighting (a "radical change" with NVA use of
tanks) and ABC/CBS also featured the marked upsurge in Indochina
battles.
All nets also w/film of more violence in N. Ireland as
Catholics protested British presence.
-- ABC/NBC film reports on FTC/Bureau of Indian Affairs on charges
by Navajos of trading post fraud, deception, manipulation and threats.
Note on all nets of CEQ report air is cleaner but water dirtier.
ABC film as RN welcomed the new Senator from Louisiana.

INDOCHINA
Note by all nets that scores of US planes flew into Cambodia to
aide beleaguered Cambodian forces facing NVN tanks for the 1st time.
14 Soviet tanks were destroyed in one of the biggest tank kills of
the NVN offensive.
Rather said that despite US air power,
there's still fear the crucially-located Cambodian towns will fall as
they only have teen-aged defenders and many already fled.

film told how NVA were advancing.
