186 PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
Excepting only the Watergate, which muddied the water badly, this would
have been an excellent weekend for our side.
Three foreign stories -- Israeli thrust into Lebanon, Tanzanian move on
Uganda, and return of the three POWs dwarfed all else. Political impact
of the last as it focuses attention on the plight of our prisoners difficult
to guage. Clearly, McGovernites are hoping to benefit, given character of
those invited as "escorts" for prisoners.
FOR OUR SIDE The Dan Rather, hour-long special, a balanced piece on
the entire campaign, must be conceded to us on points -- on the basis alone
of the fine coverage given the First Family. In addition, all weekend, Family
vas prominent, including Ed Nixon and the coverage was almost uniformly good.
Canvass got some excellent play.
Kissinger- RN dwarfed McGovern on Sunday, with good picture, in new outside-
Oval Office setting. (Though analyses and comment on HAK visit implied he
is leaving the impression of movement at Paris with little to back it up.)
(Again, this demonstrated how Admin. can dominate coverage with hard news --
eclipsing McGovern's political charges.)
President's visit to Italo-American celebration, and Catholic convalescent
home surprisingly small press this morning, McGovern's pre-emptive strike
on President's heroin policy got a bit more in a very, very weak political
news morning in the press. President's visit today to State, however, should
put into the shade the McGovern back-page attack on President's drug record.
FOR THEIR SIDE McGovern came riding out on the Watergate issue with
his Whitewash charge, got good play although he is being pressed a bit for
specifics, on Re-Elect higher up, and other S against whom he is making charge.
Also, his contention yesterday on President dragging his feet on drugs got
some small coverage in, again, a weak news day politicaly (several papers
this morning have no political news p.
Watergate This past weekend, post-indictments, the Washington Post
continued with its "Death of a Thousand Cuts" by revealing Sunday that seven
top Re-Elect officials had access to the secret fund, and this morning they
name two -- Magruder and Porter. This likely to continue, on and on and
on although one wonders if McGovern by playing the shrill prosecutor
is scoring any points for himself, even if he is scoring some against the
Re-Elect Committee.
