December 12, 1972
(Monday nets, wires, mags, columns)
Major Stories of Day:
All nets led with Cernan and Schmitt's bull's-eye lunar landing as
the two explorers could hardly contain themselves.
Schmitt
enthusiastically exclaimed "Oh, man, look at that rock over there,
it's absolutely incredible, 11 and Cernan yahooed "We is here, man
is we here. 11 UPI reported the two sounded like excited children
at Disney World. NASA called the landing - about 300 feet off
target "about best ever made. 11
As Cernan stepped onto lunar
surface, he dedicated first step "to all those who made it possible, 11
and Schmitt, noting it was last Apollo, thinks "the next generation
should accept this as a challenge. 11
All nets reported Shultz said R.N will ask controls be extended beyond
April 30 expiration date; that salaries at executive level will be
frozen in all 3 branches; and that freeze has been placed on Govt
hiring and promotions. Shultz ruled out a return to voluntary
guidelines, and Shultz, on ABC/NBC, said Admin will no longer
discuss question of whether there will be controls but what kind
of system will be most effective
ABC's Jarriel saw move as
admission economy is still inflationary and beyond voluntary
restraint, and NBC's Kiker says control could end up as first
big WH-Hill confrontation in 173
CBS' Schorr foresees Govt
control of itself, at least as sternly as it controls the economy.
Sevareid commented on the hard time the Admin faces in controlling
the economy, particularly when the war simmers down and domestic
ailments move to the center of attention.
All nets with more positive reports on peace talks, with NBC's Utley
seeing peace "perhaps close at hand at last" w/Porter-Thuy; HAK-Tho
and technical meetings scheduled Tues. an indication peace could
come this week. Film on ABC/NBC of what NBC called "Surprise"
Porter presence for first time at private sessions
NBC's Dobyns
reports Paris speculation is agreement could come in days while
Valeriani notes Washington diplomatic sources think agreement
could come Wednesday, following Thieu's Tues. speech to S. Viets
ABC sees no reason for pessimism but net sources say agreement
is not expected within a few days tho it will come soon
Altho CBS'
Collingwood cautioned that it's easy to read too much into the talks,
he points out that the actions of both sides are consistent w/what would
happen if a settlement were in sight the drafting experts won't be
busy drafting nothing
Valeriani says one theory re: official blackout
on talks is that RN will announce settlement and no one wants to upstage
the Pres.
