The major stories of the day:
All nets dominated by the renewed heavy US bombing above
20th parallel as US apparently seeks to show NVN that delay
in the talks won't help Hanoi. A CBS source at DOD says
there are fewer bombing restrictions than at any time in war.
And NBC noted new targets are available w/possibly heaviest
bombing of the war now being carried out. "RN took off the
kid gloves, 11 said Cronkite in lead.
Technical talks in Paris
broken off by NVN to protest raids.
Reasoner, w/a very harsh
commentary, accuses RN of breaking HAK's word and breaking faith
with the US public.
Sevareid, w/less harshness, told of the
'depression" in Washington and the "astonishing" fact, if true,
that the real sticking point is the same one that's long been the
key to the war SVN's claim to be a separate nation.
Symington on NBC said he'd been told in Oct/Nov. that peace
was not so close as HAK had indicated. US was "misled, 11
said Symington.
Saigon is pleased w/breakdown in Paris
tho not happy that US is ready to sign even w/out Thieu.
Nets all noted sharp 14 point D-J decline attributed to VN
pessimism.
In other VN news, NBC w/film from Thai base where USAF pilots
said they're just carrying out their job "a long way from
Paris", said reporter
NBC film also of backbone of Thieu's
political organization the officer corps which has been handled
w/a political finesse unmatched by any of Thieu's predecessors.
Time's lead story: "A Shattering Disappointment" topped by photos
of smiling Oct 26 HAK and very serious Dec. 16 HAK. And Newsweek
leads w/"Peace May Be a Little Late This Year. 11 Both mags feature
same cartoon which reflects seemingly unending peace talks.
Apollo 17 splashes down at 2:45 Tues film on all nets of news
conference on way home.
HST's kidney function remains inadequate and, altho he briefly talked
for 1st time in week, he's still "very serious. 11
2-3 minute clips of OTP's Whitehead on all nets as he said local
affiliates are, in the final analysis, responsible for balance of
netword news content which they show. How the locals handle
balance in news and entertainment will be a factor in license
