POST-SPEECH REACTION
THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN.
ABC
Tom Jarriel said that RN confirmed what we had been
told to expect that we will have a "gov't controlled
economy" for some time to come.
Reasoner anchoring the discussion said that RN,
stating that the medicine is so good for us we re
going to take more, generally outlined the boards
that will watch over the economy. And he added
that it seems that RN has struck the "right mix".
To which Jarriel noted that Meany already announced
that "labor will buy this program. 11
Asked about the pressure on RN that went into devising
the program, Jarriel said that there was more com-
promise in it than even in most Presidential deci-
sions. This speech left no one offended; RN is
dealing carefully.and relying heavily on the inspira-
tion of public confidence and public spirit.
Bob Clark said that there will probably be more
criticism from Dems on the control of "windfall" profits;
that is likely not to be enough to satisfy them. But the
complex questions are being dumped into the laps of
the board and that is the reason we have been given 37
days to work them out. Clark said he had the feeling
that Dems "don't know what to be made about" in this
speech. But Meany's comments are likely to soothe
the Congress. Clark noted, however, that the Congress
has come to realize that the country does have a problem,
evidenced by their "surprise turn" to support the delayed
pay raise and the leadership is likely to go along with
RN. The Dem contenders can't be expected to, however,
as they want to get all the political mileage out of
blaming RN that they can.
Jarriel emphasized how much consultation RN had had
in the last two months with the interested parties but
noted that labor will still not be delighted with the
Gov't's final control over the rulings. (Except for
some emphasis on the vagueness of RN's comments,
this analysis was a favorable one.)
