WEEKEND NEWS REVIEW
November 20, 1972
Brandt has won a decisive "surprisingly large" victory and increased
his Coalition's Bundestag lead from 12 to over 40 in contest which was not
as close as had been universally predicted. Until the news from Bonn,
the major weekend story (Sun, Times, NBC/CBS leads Sat. and CBS Sun.
as well) has been HAK's departure plans and his last-minute instructions
from RN w/optimism widely expressed that this will be the last session
w/Le Duc Tho and, as Kalb put it, US POWs will start coming home by
Xmas. Gwertzman of Times reports HAK said 90% of accord has been
settled
SVN continues to voice doubts over merits of the agreement.
Very light antiwar protests as movement seems virtually moribund.
- Southern Univ. story gets new momentum w/disclosures by Gov.
Edwards, later claimed to be off-the-record, that deputies did
fire the fatal shots and that they were totally unprepared for such
a confrontation. He fears the reaction to his candid comments
The Pres. of the Univ. emotionally denied "plotting" the clash.
In his remarks, Edwards said the official should resign.
- - Argentina's concessions to Peron were featured on both nets and
prominently played Sun. as the former dictator was "released"
from a hotel miles from Buenos Aires and allowed to greet his
admirers. Trib says the Gov't had proved its point about being
in firm control. NBC, however, called him "the man of the hour"
and gave credit to Peron, saying he'd made it clear he wanted
more visibility before he'd agree to "bless" the upcoming elections.
Some local stories lead on Sunday -- the Tribune w/County Gov't
waste, the NY News w/a suicide/murder
The Post leads w/secret
DOD report that USO clubs in SVN were conduits for $5M in black market
money. DOD wants the top USO man fired
The Star leads w/report
that "RN will bypass legislative route in reorganization" more than
any other Pres. has ever done. The article gives the impression that
RN has considerably more power to act than some pundits have led us
to believe.
The Post and Sun led Sat. w/the Brewster conviction -- HAK to CD,
often w/p. 1 photos, was the lead elsewhere. Peron and Southern Univ.
were the other main Sat. press stories w/lesser, tho still often p. 1
coverage to the economy's rise beyond expectations a boomlet if not
a boom is underway, Times concludes the smashing of a key heroin ring
run out of Latin America.
