THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
The major stories of the day:

HAK's and Tho's smiles and joviality, seen as good signs of progress,
led NBC (#3 on ABC), as all nets alerted now to location of "private,
not secret" talks had play-by-play accounts of day's events. NBC
said HAK acted like "the deal was all wrapped up" he was so
relaxed, even lunching w/a woman. CBS' Kalischer who discovered
hide-out gloated over other newsmen's presence in #2 report, while
briefly noting obstacles HAK must overcome
Kalb reported strong
feeling that Admin efforts to get cease-fire supervisory troops in
place has run into "bad trouble. 11
All noted HAK went to Brussels
to confer w/Suharto and that GVN was still demanding total NVA
w/drawal
Chancellor, only one to note Thieu letter to RN
requesting a RN-SVN meeting, said it could be all the "visible
cheerfulness" in Paris in a signal to Thieu that a deal is in the works
no matter what Thieu says.

Federal appeals court reversed convictions of 5 "Chicago 7" defendants,
led ABC and was major NBC/CBS report, Altho court said 5 could
be retried, Justice's Thompson on 2 nets said he didn't know govt's
plan, AG would have to decide. Film also of various Chic. 7 defendants
on all nets expressing mixed feelings because VN is still an issue
Kunstler, on CBS, hopes the decision is widely circulated and
opinion used in other cases against protesters

Speck resentenced to 1,200 years, noted by all nets w/CBS film.

led CBS, noted by ABC/NBC.
Opening SALT II session was film report on 2 nets, w/emphasis on
goals to limit offensive weapons, and complexity of talks that could
take 4-5 years. NBC noted US-USSR optimism.

on issues facing European Security Conference
Noting better
relations and discussions between nations, Sevareid speculated on
a "cold peace" and happier, more creative confrontations via trade,
etc. in future.
