The major weekend stories:

Leading both Sun nets was "story of terror" -- New Orleans
snipers who set fire to high rise motel and proceeded to
kill 10 til 1 was machine-gunned to death by a Marine
chopper to end a 10-hour battle. Several police dead,
including #2 man in Dept. Police fear a militant
conspiracy to shoot officers.

Pledging to "do my best" in "one last major effort, 11 HAK
arrives in Paris following Le Du Tho's "uncharacteristically
tough" arrival statement Sat. The "stone faced"/frim and
severe" remarks led nets Sat and some of Sunday's major
papers. "Sign or Fight" was Post lead on his "grim and
unbending, 11 "rigid, 11 "uncompromising" blast at US for
the bombings and signing delays. NVN paper also w/sharp
blast at R.N.
RN-HAK meeting at CD Sat widely reported
US called "guardedly hopeful", "cautiously optimistic, 11
and neither optimistic nor pessimistic - - the last attitude
seen as set by R.N in a sharp contrast to the October
optimism arrival
In prominent reports on RN's
Friday meeting w/MCs in Sat papers, photo coverage
was heavy w/RN's "cautious, 11 "wait and see" attitude
dominant in stories. Sun found options left open for more
bombings; insistence on "proper kind of agreement" seen
reflecting "tough line" by some, said Times.

backed RN's negotiating efforts US denied any bombings
above 20th parallel altho intensive raids were carried out
below it

In South, the upsurge in NVA/VC attacks aren't seen by US
as very significant. NVA big guns are being moved closer
to Saigon
