THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY May 11, 1973 (Thurs. nets, wires, columns) With indictments of 2 former Cabinet secretaries and RN campaign directors leading all nets, the unprecedented domination by Watergate- related news continued w/14-16 minutes total on each. The major stories: Indicted on counts of influence peddling, perjury and obstructing justice were Mitchell and Stans. Film on all as the 2nd AG indicted in US history (NBC) said it was "irresponsible" and that he'll be vindicated. Stans on NBC film from wife's hospital similarly expressing his confidence that he'll be exonerated. NBC's Stern noted 12 of 16 counts don't deal w/the $200, 000 contribution from also-indicted Vesco but w/alleged perjury. If it's true Mitchell/Stans lied there, it raises question as to their believability in Watergate probe. No longer is this a case of dirty politics, said Stern, but whether top officials of gov't, past and present, are telling the truth. Sevareid w/new charge of Mitchell effort to influence Supreme Court in '69 on wiretap.case went on to say that improprieties which become habit lead to illegalities. Byrne held up decision on throwing out case or declaring mistrial as he gave Govit more time to produce info gleaned from Ellsberg tap in '69-'70. Tap not revealed til Thurs in what NBC called "sensational" development and CBS termed "an 11th hour bombshell. 11 Defense is "gleeful"; judge was upset, FBI says it can't find the file to trial on tap and UPI said "an abrupt end/was imminent. 11 CBS film from Miami of 1 of 3 burglars as he said they did go after Ellsberg material -- followed reporter in doctor's office where dr. is now quite sure files were photographed. NBC film from McClellan Comm. where probe into CIA's lst-ever psychiatric profile of a US citizen while in US continues and McClellan charges "serious impropriety" but can't say if JDE knew of burglary itself. Reasoner defended media from charges that it's glorified Ellsberg and/or neglected to cover Chappaquiddick fully enough.
