NEWS SUMMARY
May 15, 1973
(Monday nets, wires)
The major stories of the day:
-- Skylab's astronauts won't go up til Sunday to give NASA a chance to
devise a shorter flight plan in light of electrical problems in the
$2. 5B project. Failure of some of Skylab's solar energy panels
to deploy was #5 story on all nets.
All nets led w/film of Ruckleshaus announcing FBI files on Ellsberg
tap and on 17 other gov't employees/newmen had been found in JDE
safe. CBS led by noting Ruckleshaus almost had to "arm wrestle"
his way around USSS agent to get files. Also noted by ABC w/Gear
saying those files weren't easy to get.
All nets then followed w/Symington on film as he said HRH/JDE
and Dean were "deeply involved" in other requests for CIA help
beyond Ellsberg burglary but not specifically including Watergate
breakin.
Also in top 3 stories on all shows was Sirica order that copies of
Dean's "super-secret" files go to WH, prosecutor and to Senate
comm. Film on all as Dean had "no comment" for press
HRH
on CBS again saying he'd cooperate fully and had no plans to take
5th or seek immunity
JDE on CBS silent film as Schorr said
Ellsberg dismissal isn't end of that case as a grand jury will be
convened soon in LA w/JDE the center of it and Liddy-Hunt and
Krogh also to be called.
Continuing an unusual similarity in order of their stories, all
reported as #4 stories that Richardson told Judiciary of his top
4 choices for special prosecutor and speculation is that Tyler, a
NY judge named by JFK, heads the list. All nets said word that
WH suggested any possibilities at all (Pat Brown, Warren Hearnes)
aroused new concern as to whether Admin can investigate itself.
ABC said some solons were "shocked" and ABC/CBS both noted
Hart said WH suggestions, reportedly by Haig-Garment, indicated
11 a singular lack of sensitivity. 11 (9-11 minutes on all shows.)
All nets noted, NBC w/film of an angrier than usual Tho, that NVN
says there'll be no HAK talks if US is bombing in SVN. ICCS to
investigate charge which US has denied, altho CBS noted unofficial
sources say accidental crossing of border may have occurred. All
nets also noted 2 Senate Committees moved to stop any more funding
of Indochina military operations.
