The major stories of the day:
Fiery 9-car pileup just seconds after delayed Indy "500" got
underway sent rookie driver Walther and 7 spectators to the
hospital and postponed race til Tues. Led ABC/CBS and was
film report also on NBC. ABC's McKay noted growing fears
that increased speeds would cause such an accident were confirmed.
40 dead from "devastating round" (NBC) of tornadoes and floods
in South/Midwest over weekend. NBC led, ABC/CBS w/film
reports from devastated areas, including Ark., Ala., and
Carolinas where destruction was termed "worst in years. 11
"Worst" tornadoes in history (UPI) hit Athens, Georgia.
ABC/NBC noted RN called on US to honor war dead who brought
promise of peace a little closer
NBC only net w/film of
Schlesinger at Arlington ceremonies saying w/out sentiments
of patriotism and spirit of sacrifice no nation can survive or
carry on responsibilities that fall to US. (CBS w/silent clip of
Schlesinger there as net closed w/bugle playing taps.)
Sevareid compared Admin repairing defenses to Skylab repairwork
and said HAK, almost alone in Admin, isn't experiencing weight-
lessness as his focus shifts from VN "a year diversion of HAK
from his natural purpose" -- to problems of Europe, SALT and
"balancing problems w/USSR, 11 all areas where his authority's
acknowledged.

who's conducting 1st medical experiments in space, said question of
up/down wasn't a problem -- astronauts tell their brains what
direction they want "up" to be.
Giving very little attention to Watergate, all nets noted Ervin said
comm. will develop testimony gradually and logically so former
WH aides won't appear til mid-June

noted, Muskie at FDR wreath-laying ceremonies criticized RN's
nat'l security explanation and called for truth and candor
