The major stories of the day:
RN goes to New Orleans despite unresolved assassination
conspiracy. Five minute lead reports on all nets w/ABC/CBS
opening from airport and reviewing the security situation. NBC
also began from airport arrival but had report on threat to RN
life after film of speech. All noted "rare, " "unique" announce-
ment by USSS w/NBC/ABC noting first time a presidential
appearance went ahead w/plot unresolved. All nets noted planned
motorcade had to be canceled.
N. Mex. police shot at ex-New
Orleans cop Gaudet who is sought for threat to RN life, unrelated
to conspiracy. He's still at large.
Despite all the precautions, said Utley, RN did what he went
there for and gave strong defense of Indochina policy. He was
"received warmly, said Goralski. "Thunderous applause"
said Rather. All nets w/clips of ovations as RN defended secret
bombing of Cambodia (ABC/CBS film) and warned against "bug-
ging out" from defense requirements (NBC/CBS film)
All
nets w/clip of RN shoving RZ in incident seen as reflecting his
nervousness over situation, given the report of plot.
Rogers on film on all nets cautioning against obsession w/security
that could result in extralegal acts such as Ellsberg break-in
which he doesn't feel was justified on nat'l security grounds. All
3 commentators saw Rogers seeking to put distance between himself
and WH. ABC/CBS expect rumors over his departure to increase
w/Kalb feeling Rogers deliberately sought such speculation and
Marvin also noting perhaps coincidental, but still first time
appearance of HAK press man Janka at a Rogers conference.
