THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY October 12, 1973 (Thurs. nets, wires, papers) The Agnew resignation and Mideast again dominated all nets w/11-14 minutes of former and 6-9 minutes on the war. The highlights of these stories: - RN prepares for 1st use ever of 25th Amendment. Led ABC w/film seen on all nets of a smiling RN seeing off Ivory Coast Pres and, on ABC/CBS film, at export conf. where again RN was seen broadly smiling and he received warm applause. Despite this favorable impression gained by observer, NBC's Brokaw felt RN looked tired and forced his smiles. Brokaw/Rather both cited type of man RN wants: strong and not a caretaker. And Brokaw said it's to be someone experienced in foreign affairs and defense who'd share RN views. That eliminates GOP libs except for Rocky, said NBC. RN chopper off to CD shown on CBS w/note by others that decision may come from there this weekend. - If RN wants to avoid a fight, don't send JBC's name up. That's the 1 clear signal from Hill to RN, led Mudd. Similarly NBC said the 1 man regarded as unacceptable to many in both parties is JBC. And ABC said JBC is the 1 name bringing "bitter" remarks. Some of "surprisingly vigorous" comment is "savage" in tone, said Mudd. CBS poll of Senate found JBC evoking the most "nos" - - 21 against to 17 who'd accept him. Rocky was accepted 32-5; Reagan by 19-15. Ford, Rocky and Reagan are major choices in House, said ABC which also had a poll, this one of GOP State Chairman. 9 for Reagan; 6 for JBC; 5 for Rocky; 3 for Goldwater. NBC reported a Quayle poll which Chancellor sees as giving RN flexibility -- 93% oppose any limitation on nominee's '76 plans. No clear-cut choice for replacement seen.
