The major stories of the day:
"It finally came to pass, 11 led Cronkite, that Arab and Jew
met together to talk of peace in the Holy Land. Chancellor
in lead NBC story said conference has "great promise" but
negotiating won't be easy. On CBS HAK said sides can "ex-
haust themselves in maneuvers¹ or try to make real progress,
not propaganda. On NBC/ABC he asserted the "common goal
of peace" must be broad enough to embrace the varying Arab-
Israeli aspirations. But the Arabs talked tough, perhaps just
for the record suggested Utley. Eban and Fahmy on film
clashing. But Sat. is 1st private session noted Utley and that
may produce 1st progress. ABC again w/background reports
on Arab-Israeli mood.
Noting Hill's desire to adjourn ABC led saying Hill passed flurry
of bills, but not energy legis which was bogged down in wind-
fall profits dispute. CBS/NBC also w/reports. Breaking stale-
mate Senate buckled (52-8) to oil-state filibuster backed by lobbyists
and WH. An angry Jackson warned of punitive action after
recess on CBS/ABC film. ABC's Clark said Senate sent bill
to House where they'l have to "take it or leave it"
CBS w/
look at enormous profit jumps for big/majors oil in '73 -- partially
because '72 was poor year
ABC film noted skepticism about
energy crisis in Berkshires. So did Brinkley who noted
Americans will respond to Simon's call for 10-gal. restriction
if they're given a good reason for sacrifice, if they're not talked
to like children, if they don't feel they' re being swindled, if they
see their leaders actually setting an example.
CPI was up 8% in November -- that's 8. 4% since Nov. '72, noted
Chancellor, largest annual increase since BLS has kept records
on big increases in fuel and electricity costs. Chancellor noted
food costs were up 1. 4% last month
D-J was off 10 but
finished week up 3.
Chancellor noted energy crisis has also
been bad news for homebuilders w/housing starts off 3/4M
