NEWS SUMMARY April 4, 1974 (Wed nets, wires) The major stories of the day: -- Patricia Hearst, in "startling, 11 "stunning" development, sends tape saying she will "stay and fight" w/the SLA against the corporate class. Led ABC/CBS. #2 NBC. -- According to Joint Tax Comm. staff, RN owes $476,000 in back taxes and interest. Led NBC w/4-5 minutes on all shows. #2 on ABC/CBS. All reported IRS told WH on Tues. that $465, 000 is owed and WH has announced that will be paid. NBC added that RN will also pay '69 tax altho statute of limitations had run out. No indication of fraud cited by Comm. or IRS -- again noted by all nets. And it was noted that Comm. itself hasn't yet endorsed the report. Schorr called it damaging enough already -- 1 of most damaging blows yet to strike RN. And ABC said payment of the back taxes will "gutR RN's estate. 11 Nets noted Tax Comm. staff report focused on the VP papers -- disal- lowed for coming after the law was changed -- and capital gains taxes not paid on San Clemente and NYC apt. NBC/ABC also noted RN should include as income $93,000 of gov't expenses at KB/WWH. Only NBC noted Admin official accused Comm. of "partisan" attitude, saying it took advantage of every point it could to get maximum amount. And official was especially critical of advance stories re: fraud. -- Chapin defense rested after prosecutors won from Chapin an admission that he'd misstated facts to FBI. Case to jury Thurs. w/1 of the 4 charges of lying thrown out and another one called weak by Gesell. Nets all stressed HRH had okayed Segretti and dirty tricks plan altho Chapin tried to hold that back to protect HRH. And ABC/CBS reviewed Chapin memo which showed he was aware of Segretti projects. But ABC said Dean's appearance was less than total success. CBS said the "all-purpose prosecution witness" added so little
