    "ocrText": "7\nPaul Harvey notes there was much public, media and Hill\nencouragement for the tax men to \"get\" RN on his returns and\n\"clobber that cheater good. 11 But when the findings came out,\nleaving RN bleeding, \"A strange thing happened. 11 Long said staff\nmay've been too rough on him. And public, \"hollering for blood\"\njust hours before, started offering to help RN pay. In fact, \"the\nchorus of defenders has almost drowned out the accusers. 11 Harvey\ndoesn't know whether RN's beneficiary of pity, sympathy or guilt of\nothers -- but he's still receiving calls from all directions offering\nhelp to RN. Harvey told his listeners he can't aid in such a fund-\nraiser, but he said up to $30.00 can be given without RN having to\ndeclare it as income. However, he emphasized WH is tryingtto turn\noff theseprivate moves and will return the money if there's a return\naddress. \"Otherwise, what it amounts to is a sort of a secret ballot. \"\nWm. White notes \"RN's enemies and mere unmalicious adversaries\nhave now 'virtually wiped out' his savings w/an unloving attn tohhis\nreturns never before given any high official. Worst that's charged. is\nhe took same deduction for gifts of his papers' that others had. \"RN\ngot hung up on a technicality -- plus, it appears, some bad accountant\nadvice where others didn't. 11 Another \"1st\" is Hill comm investigation.\nBut, adds White, don't wait \"for any similar 'probe' into any other\nelevated pol's tax affairs.\nRN has been singled out for a kind of special\ntreatment never likely to be seen again in our time. 11 RN was \"wrong\"\nand technically \"admits it, 11 but \"it's hard not to gag a little at this\nspectacle of the flaming sword of fiscal justice considering that many\nmulti-millionaires, some of them backers of Dems, have for years\ngotten away w/and will continue to get away w/on April 15. 11 White says\n\"if this elaborate attempt to make RN a special and unique sinner against\ntax system is to be used' in Judiciary probe \"as it already is being\nused to whip up public anger against RN -- the righteous can have it all\nfor themselves. 11"
