Mudd on CBS AM reported Senate will make 2nd try Tues. to
cut off filibuster on campaign financing. If it fails it could try
again Wed, but after that bill would be dead. Some Senators are
going on a junket and rest will leave for vacation. Also among the
Sens. who voted cloture last week, Russell Long, Church and
McGee will be away on Tues. and Dole is not firm about his previous
vote. One Sen. said it was very frustrating as he feels the Senate has
the votes but it's hard to get them in same room at same time.
Trib's Kohlmeier notes "you've heard plenty about Stans, the
man from CREEP who held the GOP money bag while fat cat
contributors tossed in hundreds of thousands of dollars. Well, meet
Strauss, the man from CREED [Committee to Reelect a Dem Congress]
who held the Dems money bag and collected from some of the very
same business and labor fat cats Dem money remains the biggest
untold story of W'gate mess. 11 Kohlmeier reports CREED "raised
$628, 000" for Dem Hill candidates in 172, and "some of the money
came from sources that've proved embarrassing to GOPs. 11 Among
them: - Equity Funding head Goldblum, oil man Pauley, Henry Ford,
Cowboys owner Murchison. "Little wonder Dems who control Hill
haven't produced any real political campaign reform legis, " says
Kohlmeier. "Dems are the foxes guarding the chicken coop. "
Sperling notes a group of prominent Dems were discussing '76,
eliminating all nominees for 1 reason or another, til someone suggested
a Percy type: "a lot of the Kennedy charisma --w/out the Kennedy
problems. 11 Sperling notes that for 8 years 1 veteran DC newsman has
thought Percy should be a Dem based on his views. But Percy's not
likely to jump given Lindsay precedent "and the less-than-enthusiastic
welcoming of JBC into GOP. " He's convinced his "progressive
Republicanism" might just be just what GOP wants in '76. He can point
to his own 172 victory -- greater than RN's -- as his credentials. And
he's convinced that if nominated, he'd win.
