Lisagor doesn't see the validity of commending RN's tax
payments. "The cold, hard realities of his political predicament
overshadow any attempt, however adroit, to make his agreement
to pay an act of heroism. It's a wipe-out and it's sad.
But
who's to blame? 11 Lisagor says trying to blame the preparers is
like blaming CRP for W'gate "an interesting diversion, nothing
more.
[And] before VP and others manage to embed CREEP in
mythology of misguided amateurism, one fact should be remembered.
It was created, nourished and toilet-trained by WH, and imbued
w/ ethics of the place.
Its guidance and inspiration came from
Oval thru HRH, 11 says Lisagor [so] "who's WH trying to kid about those
tax returns."
"Still another blow" to RN, led Duke on NET's Wash WkiIn
Review. This'll almost certainly bring further political damage to
RN.
Shanahan of Times on NET said it was mistake to ask Jt.
Commin sense that its staff is of the unique, uncowable nature that
Cox was. Staff is famed for its industry, care and thoroness. She
feels there' be "tremendous cumulative [negative] effect from report
which found 5 different categories should' been taxed and 6 different
categories were improper deductions. Perhaps RN's not to blame,
but how could any responsible accountant get such things as the
capital gains wrong? There's no proof, said Shanahan, but she feels
there's "tremendous amount of evidence" of knowledge of fraud,
especially re: VP papers. At very best, returns were enormously
disgraceful" and "slipshod."!
Time's MacNeil on NET can't see how Judiciary can ignore
fraud probe, but Shanahan said Rodino, despite a distinguished tax
lawyer on staff, doesn't plan to look into it. MacNeil added that
Spec. Pros. will probably look into fraud possibility. He doesn't see
much Hill imp act, however, and suggested public may also be
immune to more bad news.
Sidey on Agronsky said Tax Comm report showed a "profile of
deception [that] seems to almost have been deliberate. 11 RN's returns
weren't honest, Sidey asserted. As for IRS saying there's no RN
fraud, Sidey/Agronsky noted that's same IRS that congratulated RN
on returns last year and now has promoted the fellow who wrote that
letter.
