IMPCH
Rhodes is sure WH/Judiciary diffs over tapes will be worked out,
NBC noted. Compromise is in works, said ABC w/Rhodes saying
Comm has narrowed down request to avoid fishing expedition charge
Scherer said a high GOP official told NBC WH will comply w/Tues
deadline, tho not all the talks were recorded, but full enough response
will be made to make subpoena out of the question. Still, some MCs
are likely to object over rights given WH to determine relevance of
tapes.
Further Rhodes said RN is now handling WGate situation "very
well, 11 tho at times in past it left "something to be desired. " and
Rhodes has gut feeling there aren't enought House votes to impch.
Times's MacNeil on NET said if RN defies Comm, it'd be
"astonishing. 11 Given warnings from Scott, RN would likely coalesce
entire Congress behind Rodino. If RN has evidence that he'll not
give up, it's a point of law that he'll lose the presumption of innocence,
MacNeil asserted.
Rhodes said contempt citation by itself wouldn't be impchble offense
Hill can't enforce that and person charged must be found guilty by a
court. But he doesn't see need for subpoena given WH/Hill progress
and whatever diffs remain can be worked out by the respective attys.
He several times contended that WH has not been delaying the probe
and it was essential for Judiciary to limit its 2/25 request as it's
doing
Time's MacNeil on NET said Rodino narrowed and reduced
base of request so as to prevent any funny stuff by WH, eg, RZ talk
about backing up a truck.
MacNeil had RZ on the mind and asked
Lisagor if RZ was one of those responsible for RN taking tax case to
Hill in 1st place. Lisagor said RN's very much his own man and if
he's taking RZ advice, US is worse off than imagined.
Mills did a little backing and filling on Issues when he predicted
Judiciary would vote to impch. W/out the evidence they've made up
their minds? asked reporter. No, Mills said. If evidence isn't there,
they'll not vote out the bill. (But Mills already said they would vote
it out. ) Further, Mills sees large, non-partisan vote by House -- but
he added that was based on judgement of others.
