IRS/TAXES
Richmond Times-Dispatch calls IRS ruling "another stunning
blow" for RN and says the last hasn't been heard of RN's tax problems
nor should it be til justice is completely satisfied. But is issue being
approached in most desirable manner? Most taxpayers in RN's
situation probably would challenge the bill -- and it's not at all
unusual for courts to overrule IRS decisions. But given climate of
opinion in US, any RN challenge "would be denounced
as a despicable
attempt to obstruct justice, 11 notes Times-Dispatch. While RN's been
contradictory and evasive at times in his W'gate defense, and occasionally
too combative, "it's also true RN's been the target of vituperative attacks
from many pols and journalists who decided long ago he's a criminal
who should be ejected from office. 11
For all anybody knows, RN owes every penny assessed. Likewise,
his talk of having a potentially strong defense may be "so much face-
saving bluster' and he's getting just what he deserves. But even if
true, "it's nevertheless saddening that US mood is such that RN couldn't
politically afford even to attempt further efforts to defend his original
returns, 11 says Richmond paper.
KC Times calls tax bill shocking info for US to absorb. It'll
certainly intensify RN's problems w/ doubts sure to grow about his
ability and fitness to govern and dismay over low state of Admin sure
to spread. Any excuses offered will fall w/ a hollow thud on taxpayer's
ears. ''It's not enough to say 'everybody does it' or that 'other Presi-
dents have done it. 111 And any claim that RN was betrayed by either
the ineptitude of those he trusted is "particularly dumb. 11 If a false
date was knowingly entered on returns, then it should be found out
who caused it to be done. Edit would like to see tax returns of all fed
officials especially MCs made public, yet what might be discovered in
their returns isn't really pertinent to the questions engulfing Presidency.
The system can't be said to be "working" just because a guard found
some locks at W'gate taped 1 June night, says KC Times.
