UPI says RN appeared in a jaunty mood and seemed pleased
w/turnout.
UPI says "welcome" signs were visible everywhere and many
looked identical, indicating they were distributed by organized
RN supporters. Detractors made presence felt, too. Occasion-
ally they sought to interrupt speeches w/chanting. At one point,
they almost drowned him out w/ repeated shouts of "Impeach
Nixon now. 11 Critics also waved signs reading "Throw the bum
out, 11 "Jail to the Chief, 11 'Nixon the Traitor, 11 "Impeach with
Honor, 11 and "Impeach the Thief. 11 Some of these seen on film,
but pro-RN signs far more in evidence.
As AP says: "Every-
where RN went during 57-mile motorcade, he was greeted by
cheering crowds that outnumbered and outshouted protesters
calling for impchment. 11 And he spoke on issues w/local appeal.
Sparling told 1 reporter, "RN's not here as a campaigner.
He's here to address himself to the issues. 11 Similar to Jarriel,
AP says if RN wasn't campaigning, he gave a credible imitation
of it, boosting Sparling at every opportunity.

acted like the candidate himself.
UPI found Sparling w/
demeanor of USSS agent as he moved along/RN, with sometimes w/
his arm draped protectively around RN.
