THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY May 24, 1974 (Thurs. nets, wires) The major stories of the day: "Inadequate, 11 "unsatisfactory. 11 That Doar description of t' scripts as evidence in a "constitutional process" led all nets w/Rodino on all nets supporting him citing "mis- statements, omissions of words and paragraphs, mis- attributions in the statements of individuals, additions, inaudibles and then there's the category of material supposedly unrelated to Pres. actions which were deleted. And we don't know what it is. 11 NBC's Scherer called the comments of Rodino, Doar and Jenner who agreed completely on NBC film -- the strongest criticism of t'scripts to date and "still another attempt" to get RN to turn over tapes. NBC said JSC made himself available as soon as news of Comm. comments reached WH. Rather said JSC's letter to Comm. and appearance on WH lawn was an "immediate counter-attack. 11 On all nets he said it escapes him why Rodino-Hutchinson don't accept RN's offer and come down to WH and verify the t'scripts in the same way ther were prepared by listening to them. Rather on CBS said "in sum, RN's message to Hill was defiance. 11 Morton on CBS said Doar called offer unconstitutional since each MC must judge evidence for himself. Morton said Doar indicated he'd recommend further subpoenas. And ABC's Donaldson noted McClory "and others' called WH offer unacceptable as MCs can't delegate their responsibility. Meanwhile, noted Jarriel, RN was "proceeding as Pres despite criticism he should take into consideration his perilous political position.' ABC/NBC noted (over silent film) RN's meeting w/ Russ parliamentarians who brought a private communication from Brezhnev. ABC/NBC noted preparations for summit continued w/Warren saying RN will go, negotiating from a position of strength. Brokaw noted WH dismisses suggestion RN's been weakened because of impchmnt investigation. ABC quoted Warren that US foreign policy isn't conducted "on the basis of domestic debate. 11
