The major stories:
-- RN told Cabinet he plans to stick it out, led NBC
and that he's absolutely not considering resignation.
Mudd said RN was "still stonewalling it." But,
Chancellor continued, political pressures on Hill
grew to "menacing proportions, especially w/in
GOP w/1 of RN's strongest and most loyal supporters
(Rhodes) calling for impchmnt
"The GOP gave
up Tues. on RN, " led CBS noting GOP House ldr.
Rhodes reversal, all 10 Judiciary GOP defenders
now "abandoning" RN, and most GOP senators favoring
resignation.
"RN appears virtually powerless to
control events on Hill," led ABC on the rapidly
moving events.

Situation in Senate described by NBC as "desperate,"
"very weak," "critical" w/Goldwater reportedly
saying you can only be lied to SO often and it's
time to take stand that "we want out. W/in day
or 2, Tower on all nets indicated Sen. GOPs to
seek meeting w/RN to tell him gravity of situation
Aiken also on all shows saying there'd be big sigh
of relief on Hill if RN resigned.
Theory that
RN could make it w/hard-core in Senate "collapsed
in shambles, said ABC.
Rather said RN's Senate
friends feel a gentlemen's agreement can be
reached w/VP and Hill not to pursue RN legally
if he 11 resign soon. The longer he waits, the
more difficult that 11 become and if he's convicted,
Rather emphasized, he'd lose pension and other
benefits. Griffin's suggestion of immunity bill
noted by CBS and O'Neill's sympathy for such a move
noted by ABC. But Rhodes on ABC film was very staunch
in opposition, tho perhaps as pressure tactic for
resignation, said ABC.
All nets noted RN considered
resignation Sun, but has now ruled it out, altho
ABC/CBS both said Jerry Warren didn't categorically
say it wouldn't happen.
Let RN go if he will and
give him his pension, etc, said Reasoner in
commentary calling for "amnesty" for the Pres.
