PRESENTATION OF
PETITIONS OF SUPPORT
BY MEMBERS OF CONGRESS
Monday, September 21, 1970
4:15 P. M.
The Cabinet Room
THE PRESIDENT:
BACKGROUND
Approximately 25 Senators and Congressmen have petitions of support
for your decisions regarding Vietnam and Cambodia from their
constituents which they will present to you. These petitions are in
various forms including individual sheets of names and coupons.
SEQUENCE OF EVENTS
4:15 p. m.
You will position yourself in front of the door in the
Cabinet Room which leads to the Rose Garden next to
the de Lazlo painting of Theodore Roosevelt. The
curtains will be drawn so as to provide a backdrop
for the photographs. The Senators and Congressmen
who will present the petitions (see attached list) will
have assembled in the Roosevelt Room. When you are
in place they will move to the door of the Cabinet Room
and one by one step up to where you are standing and
present their petitions. Ollie Atkins will be present
to photograph each presentation.
After each individual Congressman has presented his
petition he will move to the north end of the room by
the fireplace and place his petition on the north end of
the Cabinet table. After all of the presentations have
been made, you should move to the end of the Cabinet
table where all of the Congressmen will be gathered
in a semi-circle. You will stand in front of them with
the petitions piled on the table in front of you. At this
point the Press will be brought in for a photo opportunity.
