JOHNNY CASH is one of the most celebrated figures in the world of country music. His interest and ability in this field stems from childhood, when the Cash family would gather each evening to sing popular songs as well as those they had composed while working in the cottonfields during the day. Johnny, who is one-quarter Cherokee Indian, grew up in Dyess, Arkansas. By the age of twelve he was writing his own songs, and during his high school years he sang on the radio. After serving in the Air Force, Johnny went to Memphis to pursue his ambition of entering the field of country music. He took a radio-announcing course and sup- ported himself by selling appliances door-to-door, finally signing a recording contract. Today his baritone voice is heard on more than fifteen mil- lion records and almost one million tapes. He premiered his own television show January 21, 1970. This evening he will perform with members of the cast of his television show: The Carter Family, The Statler Brothers, The Tennessee Three, and Carl Perkins.
