COPY May 20, 1954 Mrs. Anne Newman 322 Massachusetts Avenue, N. E. Washington, D. C. Dear Mrs. Newman: We are glad to enclose a replacement citation for the one which was presented to J. A. C/R Bockhurst by General Dwight D. Eisenhower at the National Press Club in Washington, D. C., on Tues- day, November 18, 1947. The same man who signed the original citation, Major General William E. Bergin, has also signed this replica of it. I am sure you will appreciate that with the great number of requests which are received for the President's autograph, he has had to adopt the practice of not autographing any citations - not even the ones which he originally had signed. However, the staff at the White House were glad to make it possible for us to obtain the enclosed replica of the citation and the Vice President was pleased to autograph it for you. With all good wishes, Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods Personal Secretary to the Vice President RMW:s Enclosure Reproduced at Richard Nixon Presidential Library THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON 12 May 1954 Dear Miss Woods: As requested by Mrs. Ann Whitman, I have looked into the matter concerning the citation previously awarded to Mr. J. A. Bockhurst. Attached is a replacement citation signed by Major General William E. Bergin, The Adjutant General, Department of the Army, with one copy. You may wish to suggest to the Vice President that under the blue seal on the original docu- ment could be typewritten "Decoration pre- sented by General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower at the National Press Club, Washington, D. C., Tuesday, November 18, 1947", over the signature of the Vice Presi- dent. I do hope everyone concerned finds this arrangement satisfactory. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. With every good wish. Sincerely, ROBERT Lt. Colonel, L. C. Dear Ann: I am enclosing a copy of a citation for a medal of freedom which was presented to J. A. Bockhurst at the BOCKHURST, J. A, National Press Club in Washington on Tuesday, November 8, 1947 by "General" Eisenhower. Mr. Bockhurst was a friend of the Vice President and was burned to death the end of last month. His last request was that a replica of this cination be given to Mrs. Anne Newman, 322 Massachusetts Avenue, N. E., Wash- ington, D. C., whom he planned to marry. He also re- quested, of course, that the replica be signed by the President. I presume you can get a copy of this from the Defense Department and would appreciate learning whether this request can be filled. By the time you receive this note Lent will be over so I hope we can get together for dinner again soon!
