It is unfortunate that these things happen, but from the re- action of listeners who have written to me I would judge that the broadcast succeeded primarily in angering a number of fine people. My best wishes and the best of luck to you. You were very kind to take the time and trouble to write me. Sincerely, Clete Roberts Show Richard Nixon Mr. Jack Bregman 585 North Bronson Avenue Hollywood 4, California 2/6/58 WGK:ds Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library COPY Tobouary is, 1958 Dear Robbie: I very much appreciated fill your several letters on ROBINSON, Elwood J. the subject of the Clete Roberts broadcast, as I did the fact that you did appear OC it and therefore were able to bet at least part of the secord stratght. Unfortunately, the Clete Roberts of this world are always with us, but happily there seems to be a lot fewer irrespon- sible or vicious distertions coday than there were is few years ago. M have Lot as yes had an opportunity to listen to the tape because of the heavy schedule here, but will do so as Boon as possible. Apparently, to judge from the letters we have received here, Mr. Roberts succeeded only in making the staunch friends mad. I doubt he influenced many people seriously, since it ap- pears to me that the radio and TV listener grows more discrimina- tory every day. It has occurred to me that the methods of political 2/6/58 campaigning via TV and radio of even two years ago, to use an example that has been in my mind for some time, will not be sound this year. I'd like very much to have your reaction as an expert to that. I felt that the Republican fund Einner broadcast of January 20th was poorly conceived for that reason. I also appreciated the note to my good friend Herb Klein and his kind words of the editorial. These are the things that make this work most worthwhile. wgk;ds Pat joins me in sending our very best wishes to you and Onofre. Sincerely, Richard Nixon Mr. Elwood J. Robinson 1111 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles 17, California Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library COPY February 5, 1958 Dear Mr. Murphy: Charlie McWhorter has given file me your MURPHY, George letter of January 23 about Clete Roberts show. We have a tape on it, and, as you might expect, have been hearing from some rather irate friends of the Vice President. Roberts went so far a.9 to attempt a telephone interview with the Boss for the Show. Fortunately, it was "not possible". We appreciate your letting us know about it. Happily, Roberts is in a rapidly shrink- ing minority. It is quite interesting to note some of the conversions! Cordially, William G.
