Dear Mr. Chinn:
Thank you for your recent letter. I appreciate your support for
President Reagan and your concern for the success of his Program
for Economic Recovery.
As you may know, our economy has been suffering for the better
part of the last decade from both high levels of inflation and
high levels of unemployment. The President's economic program
is designed to deal with both of these problems. The President's
policies favoring tax and regulatory relief are aimed at pro-
viding the proper incentives, and at removing existing obstacles,
to increased productivity in business and industry. Only by
laying the groundwork for an expanding and healthy private sector
can we overcome the hardship of unemployment and poverty.
At the same time, President Reagan has insisted on reducing the
growth of Federal expenditures and on maintaining the stable
growth of the money supply. Only by insuring that the Federal
government lives within its means can we break the inflationary
spiral which has gripped our national economy.
Each part of the President's Program for Economic Recovery is
integral to the ultimate goal of creating an era of sustained
real economic growth. Our economic problems are the result of
years of mistaken policies; they will not be solved overnight.
Yet, by remaining steadfast to the policies set down by President
Reagan, we can solve our problems and once again regain our
national destiny.

about deficit financing our welfare state. I

Congressmen protesting such things as pros

eign ors, I have told them when I was working
that I was willing to have my taxes raised in
order to get fiscal responsibility and a balanced
budget. none of this chd any good because
unfortunately most of our representatives

Dear Mr. Deaver:
As a foremost aide to the President, your concerns surpass
those of the average citizen; however, I believe mine bears
sufficiently upon President Reagan's policy goals and personal
image to warrant your attention.
At over 71 years of age, retiring after contributing to the
Social Security fund since its beginning, I anticipated annuity
from that fund as a significant portion of my retirement income.
Instead, I have received no income whatsoever from it for al-
most 5 months since retirement, and am informed nothing will
be received for another 7 or 8 months. Neither the Kansas City
Social Security office (apparently having jurisdiction over this
area) nor the Social Security Commissioner have responded to my
letters asking for explanation or action.
My situation parallels exactly, I believe, the President's
policy goals for the System, that is, extending the individual's
productive career past age 65, allowing him to continue to con-
tribute to the fund and at the same time postpone drawing upon
it. Treatment in my instance seems to absolutely deny this
sound philosophy of encouraging maintenance of independence and
self-support well into later years, with the expectation of some
reward for having done SO.
If, in your opinion, this matter warrants presidential consider-
ation and action, I will appreciate your bringing it to the at-
tention of President Reagan. Please let me know if additional
information is desired.
