I have asked our Personnel Office to compile the following
statistics with regard to United States Ambassadorships.
Of the 121 countries that currently have sitting Ambassadors
82 or 68% are career and 39 or 32% are non-career. Since
July 1, 1983 27 new Ambassadors have been appointed, of this
number 22 or 81% are Career Foreign Service and 5 or 19% are
non-career appointments. I hope these figures will help you
if difficulties arise with the Bill Love appointment.

in PUBLIC OPINION about how little teenagers know about American
history.
For my daily commentary on Mutual radio, I am constantly
looking for interesting stories and thought that particular
article was fascinating. I thought the President might enjoy
seeing a copy of my commentary on Ben Stein's article, which
was aired on October 13, 1983.

SURVEY OF TEENAGERS ABOUT AMERICA

THIS IS GUY VANDER JAGT:
Although his methods were admittedly unscientific, Benjamin
Stein discovered an almost unbelievable obliviousness to the world
among the Southern California teen-agers he interviewed over the
last two years.
Writing in the pretigious PUBLIC OPINION magazine, Stein
said that he had not yet found one single student in Los Angeles
who could tell him when World War II was fought. A journalism
major at USC thought it was sometime in this century.
Upon being told that we fought a war in the Pacific against
the Japanese, many wanted to know who won.
Only one student could identify Joseph Stalin. One guessed
that Salin was President just before Roosevelt.
Only two could even approximately identify Thomas Jefferson;
only one the date of the Declaration of Independence, and none
could explain the Bill of Rights.
Most tennagers were amazed that there were countries around
Russia controlled by Russia. One wanted to know why President
Reagan doesn't make them stop.
If Stein's study is at all characteristic, this country
could be in deep trouble.
If our young people have no idea when or who or why World
War II was fought and have never heard of the Bill of Rights, they
can't possibly understand why we are such a uniquely privileged
nation.
People without an understanding of how unique America really
is are not likely to value what we have enough to expend the
effort and make the sacrifices necessary to keep it.

1984 Summer Olympic Games Responsibilities
As White House liaison for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles,
I would like to reiterate the need for a fully coordinated federal
effort in support to the Games. While the White House Task Force
continues to meet on a regular basis, it is imperative that all
members of the Executive Branch are aware of their responsibility
to keep this office informed as to their activities in regard to
the Olympic Games.
This White House coordinating role is imperative if we are to
make available all the appropriate resources at our disposal.
Each agency should continue to assume their traditional respon-
sibilities, however, it is vital that this be a truly cooperative
effort.
Assisting me in this endeavor will be members of my staff,
William Sittmann and Kenneth Hill. Mr. Sittmann will be assist-
ing in the overall coordination and Mr. Hill is focusing on the
security aspects of the program. It is essential that we be
made aware of all activities involving Federal support to the
Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee or to appropriate state
and local jurisdictions.

tree cannot be planted until the Spring, I would

coordinator to assist the President in polishing his performance
on-camera, etc.
