Committees' conclusions or the facts described in the Report.
They do not refer to the diversion. In general, they confirm the
optimism in early 1986, described in the Committees' report, that
the hostages would be released. Among the most noteworthy of the
PROF messages are the following:
A January 21, 1986 PROF note from McFarlane to Poindexter
expressing skepticism about the initiative, and concern
that the "Israelis are, sucking us in on the arms transfer,
a position to which McFarlane testified at the hearing.
A February 1, 1986 PROF note from Poindexter to McFarlane
reporting G's assertion that the Ayatollah Khomeini would
step down, that the hostages would be released, and that the
Secretary's of State and Defense "still disagree on
policy grounds," that Director Casey, Attorney General
Meese, Chief of Staff Regan and Poindexter are "fully
aboard on the risky operation but most importantly President
and VP are solid in taking the position that the we have to
try." This confirms the testimony of Secretaries Shultz and
Weinberger that the President was fully aware of the risk of
the initiative but concluded to proceed.
It is also the
