Among the most noteworthy of the\nPROF messages are the following:\nA January 21, 1986 PROF note from McFarlane to Poindexter\nexpressing skepticism about the initiative, and concern\nthat the \"Israelis are, sucking us in on the arms transfer,\na position to which McFarlane testified at the hearing.\nA February 1, 1986 PROF note from Poindexter to McFarlane\nreporting G's assertion that the Ayatollah Khomeini would\nstep down, that the hostages would be released, and that the\nSecretary's of State and Defense \"still disagree on\npolicy grounds,\" that Director Casey, Attorney General\nMeese, Chief of Staff Regan and Poindexter are \"fully\naboard on the risky operation but most importantly President\nand VP are solid in taking the position that the we have to\ntry.\" This confirms the testimony of Secretaries Shultz and\nWeinberger that the President was fully aware of the risk of\nthe initiative but concluded to proceed.\nIt is also the\nUNCLASSIFIED\nPartially Declassified/Released on DEC15,198\nunder provisions of E.O. 12356\nby B. Reger, National Security Council\nUNCLASSIFIED\nfirst evidence the committees found of the Vice President's\nposition ]\nother views on UP available\nPROF notes between Poindexter and McFarlane in February 1986\ndiscussing the expected release of the hostages, and the\nproposed meeting between McFarlane and the Iranians to\ndiscuss a more positive relationship.\nA November 6, 1986 PROF Note from McFarlane to North, after\nstating Q reports]\nCentre\ntanguage,\nthe Iran initiative was exposed, \"I\ndaylights that someone has been purging\nfiles on the episode\".\nwhell\nWe believe that though investipation\nThe White House has also turned the notes over to the Independent\nCounsel.
