FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A combat wounded Vietnam veteran, Charles Timothy Hagel,
has been chosen by President Ronald Reagan to be deputy adminis-
trator of veterans affairs. He will join VA Administrator
Robert P. Nimmo in leading the government's third largest agency.
Hagel, 34 years old, most recently served as the deputy
commissioner general of the 1982 World's Fair.
A native of North Platte, Neb., Hagel holds a degree from
the Brown Institute of Radio and Television in Minneapolis and a
bachelor of science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Hagel volunteered for U.S. Army service in Vietnam where
he was wounded twice while serving in the 9th Infantry Division.
His awards include the American Spirit Honor Medal, the Purple
Heart with one oak leaf cluster, the Combat Infantry Badge,
and the Army Commendation Medal.
At one time, Hagel was a reporter for radio stations in
Omaha and Lincoln and from 1971-77 he was an administrative
assistant to U.S. Representative John Y. McCollister (R-Neb.).

From 1977-81, Hagel was manager for government affairs
for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Washington, D.C.
He was active also in President Reagan's campaign, and he served
as vice chairman of the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
As VA's deputy administrator, Hagel will assist
Administrator Nimmo in carrying out the far-flung responsibilities
of the agency which serves some 30 million living veterans through
172 medical centers, 226 outpatient clinics, 96 nursing home care
units and 58 regional offices, plus a number of satellite and
special purpose facilities.
VA also operates the National Cemetery System.
President Reagan's VA budget authority request for fiscal
year 1982 would provide $24.8 billion for VA programs, $1.7 billion
more than was spent in the current fiscal year.
The budget provides $12.8 billion in compensation and
pension payments to veterans and eligible survivors and $7.2 billion
to operate the nation's largest medical system.
Another VA program, GI Bill education, has helped educate
some 18 million veterans during its 37-year life span.
No date has been set for Senate confirmation hearings on
Hagel's appointment.
Single, Hagel resides. in Alexandria, Va., and is a member
of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The President today announced his intention to nominate
Charles Timothy Hagel to be Deputy Administrator of Veteran's
Affairs.
Mr. Hagel is presently serving as Deputy Commissioner General
of the 1982 World's Fair (Energy Expo '82) to be held in
Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1977-81 he was Manager, Government
Affairs Office, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, in
Washington, D.C. In 1971-77 he was Administrative Assistant
to U.S. Representative John Y. McCollister (R-Nebraska).
Mr. Hagel served in the U.S. Army for two years when he won
the American Spirit Honor Medal. While with the Ninth Infantry
Division in South Vietnam in 1968, he was awarded the Purple
Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, and
Army Commendation Medal. He is a member of the American Legion
and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Hagel graduated from Brown Institute for Radio and Television
in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He then graduated from the
University of Nebraska at Omaha (B.S.). He was born October 4,
1946, in North Platte, Nebraska. He currently resides in
Washington, D.C.
