August 2, 1974
From : Pat McKelvey
We have firmed up with Dan Blackburn of CBS Radio a Friday,
August 2, appearance for breakfast with "The Friday Group,
"
which Blackburn describes as the West Coast counterpart to
Godfrey Sperling's Washington breakfast club.
The group is made up of reporters from the New York Times,
Los Angeles Times, Chicago Daily News, Washington Post, Wall
Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, Time, Newsweek,
Baltimore Sun, CBS, NBC, Metromedia and even Joe Scott of
"The Political Animal. " ABC is not included because they
don't have a political reporter based in Los Angeles.
It is understood that this is a backgrounder session on a
not-for-attribution basis. The group even gives the news
magazines a break by embargoing any stories that result for
Sunday A.M. release.
The time is 9 A.M. The place is the Viscount Room of the
Sheraton-West Hotel, near MacArthur Park at 2961 Wilshire
Boulevard.

You will be making your second appearance in recent months on
the Sam Yorty Show, this time as his in-studio guest. The KGBS
morning talk show is broadcast from the Universal City Tour
Center.
July 15 to August 15 is a "rating period" for Los Angeles radio,
so you will be giving the show a real shot in the arm. They
will be promoting your appearance steadily right up to that
moment.
Sam will chat with you for a few moments, while the calls from
listeners build up and are screened to filter out the screwballs.
Then he 'll turn you over to the whims of the callers.
It is the last hour of the show, which runs from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

pillows, waterbeds and other home furnishings articles are
tested against established safety and quality standards. The
press corps is being invited (it is essentially a camera
event). Howard Winslow, Chief of the Bureau, will be your
escort on the tour. Pat Gayman will also attend.
For your information, the new president of the Home Furnishings
Advisory Board is Irene Hannaford (my wife), the first woman
to serve in that capacity. She is a second-term appointee of

Memorandum
:
Governor Reagan
Date : August 21, 1974
Subject : Round Valley visit
From :
Pete Hannaford
It has been a little more than five years since you called
for alternatives to the Dos Rios Dam which would have flooded
Round Valley, dislocating ranchers and Indians in that area.
As you approach the Valley, the airplane will circle the area
which would have become the lake impounded by the dam.
On the bus tour of the Valley, you will see an experimental
organic farm, the Indian farmlands and an Indian clinic,
converted from a former school with funds from an HEW grant.
Recently, vandals destroyed the clinic by fire. You may
wish to consider telling the Indians when you meet them that
you will discuss with Cap Weinberger possible ways and means
to find replacement funds to rebuild the clinic.
Among those attending the Indian Tribal Council meeting will
be Norman Whipple and Mrs. Ida Soares, who were leaders of the
group at the time of the dam controversy.
