MANUFACTURE OF RADIUM CLASSED AS DANGEROUS
The Academy of Medicine, upon the advice of Professor Regaud,
recently requested that the manufacture of radium be classed
as a dangerous and unhealthy industry and that it be subjected
to the same control as other notoriously toxic industries, such
as those making mercurials, lead, and arsenic. This decision
was provoked by recent deaths, particularly that of the chemical
engineer, M. Demenitroux, who formerly collaborated with Curie
and recently directed a factory for the manufacture of radioactive
products, notably those of mesothorium.
His death was due to an
anemia resulting from contact with radium products.
