Dr. J. c. Bridge,
H.M. Medical Inspectory of Tactories,
Home Office,
S.F.l.
Doar Sir:
Reforring to your recent call and inspection of our girls who are
employed at luminising the figures and hands of watch and clode dials.
Ne have been doing this worlt for nearly 12 years.
During the Wer we luminised considerable quantities of various scientific
instruments for the Government, such as those uned on Aeroplanes, Subnarines, etc.,
employing a staff for several yours of betweon 40 and 50 operators.
You wished to Jnow the percentage of Radium Salts used in our Naterial.
Our Radiun Lominous Interial is made in ton different gendos.
On our am Watches and Clocita wo employ only four grados according to the
sizo of the hands or figures of the watch or clook being luminised. The highest
grade we are now using on watches contains 132 nicrogrames of Radium Bromide content
to the Granmo of material, and the lowest grado we are now using on clock dials
contains 32 microgranmes of radium bromide content.
During the war, the marial generally used on orders from the war office
(usually termed office grade" or .2) contained 200 microgrannes of radium
Bromide content, and for ordors from the Admiralty we employed "Admiralty Grade" or
.4 containing 400 mierograzces.
You understand, doubtless, that both the material and the finished work
for the Government had to pass teste at the National Physical Laboratory.
Owing to a scare in the U.S.A. which has recently boon exploited by the
yollow press, (probably because of a temporary shortage of sonsational norra) there has
been some recent activity in the matter of inspection of the Tactories producing Radium
Luminous Naterial and organisations applying this natorial for comerci-] purposes.
We have just been infoned that on with his Assistant
Dr.Pedley.accompanied by a nurse, (all from the Columbia University,Net Tork City)visited
our
Factory at Taterbury Connecticut, and examined all employees the have been applying
Radium Matorial to our Natch or Clock dials thoro.
There were 26 of thene employees. An examination(which was very thorough) was
made of blood, heart, teeth, mouth, throat, ote.and in all cases negative results were
found, that is, thore is not the slightest indication of any injury to hoolth or body
arising out of their vocation. Many of those employoes have been constantly employed
