Dr. L. M. Boyers,
Berkeley,
California.
Dear Doctor:-
I am glad that you like Dr. Mackay's article. Dr. Mackay
is a profound student and I am very glad he took the pains to
publish his findings.
With regard to articles for and agninst the use of radium,
externally and internally, this discussion has been going on
for at least two decades. You will probably recall Dr. Dever's
speech in Philadelphia a couple of years ago. Several physicians
told me that patients already brought to hospitals for radium
treatment were removed by relatives, because of newspaper reports
on Dr. Dever's speech, claiming that radium was without benefit
in the troatment of cancer.
Nevertheless the progress of radium as a therapeutic agent
has been continuous and it now occupies a very definite place.
The internal administration of radium is in its infancy as
compared to the external administration of radium and it will
probably be a long period of argament both in the lay press and
in the modical press regarding its efficiency.
According to the best othics I believe our position should
be neutral. We are a commercial organization. We are offering
radium in a form requested by the medical profession. Radium has
been administered internally for upards of twenty years. We have
on our books physicians that have been using radium internally
in considerable quantities for a period of years. These men
continue to buy so I have reason to believe that they have found
its use beneficial. Perhaps the next article in the A.M.A. will
be more favorable. Lot us hope so.
Very truly yours,
General Sales Manager.
