    "ocrText": "June 5th,1928.\nDr. Herman Schlundt,\nUniversity of Missouri,\nRoom 110 New Chemistry Bldg.,\nColumbia, Mo.\nDear Dr. Schlundt:\nIt is my privilege to advise you that the cases of\nthe five complainants suing us for injuries claimed during their employment\nby us, have been zettled out of court. The essential points of the settle-\nment are as follows:\nEach girl is bo receive $10,000 cash plus an annual\npension of $600.00 such pension to be paid as long as the complainant is\nsuffering from the result of her employment by us.\nA Board consisting of three (3) medical men, one to be\nappointed by the plaintiffs, one by ourselves and the third selected by the\nother two, is to pass upon the conditions of the girls and judge whether\nor not they are suffering at this time as a result of their employment.\nNo one who has been in any way connected with the present litigation is\nsubject to appointment on this Board, and those who are appointed must have\nhad experience with radium. We feel that such a Board will be able to handle\nthe situation from an unbiased standpoint, and that eventually the truth\nregarding this situation will be put before the public.\nWe feel at the present that these suits have been built\nalmost exclusively upon public sentiment by the unscrupulous methods of\ntheir attorney Raymond H. Berry. It is surprising that a man of lir.Berry's\ncaliber can do when he sets about it. The oposition unfortunately became\ninterested in this proposition through the solicitation of Dr. Sochocky,\nand their cases have been built upon the foundations laid by him. It is our\nbelief that Dr. Sochocky has been the guiding factor in indicating at the\noutset that there was a hazard connected in this work, and unfortunately his\nreason for doing do was not based on any légitinate purpose. Fortunately for\nhim he became associated with such a man as Martland, who had no reason to\nbelieve that his purposes were other than the best, and was therefore, led\nalong through the path which Dr. Sochocky indicated. Dr. Martland and others\nhave operated in the best of faith, but unfortunately in our opinion have\noperated upon preverted facts and misinformation.\nWe are only too glad to recomize what may be considered\nlegitimate cases, but we do not believe that any one of the five are such.\nIt is possible that the Freyer case may have bs one time contained a small\namount of radio-active material, but she has at this time completely eliminated\nsame, and her chance for recovery under peoper medical attention is probably\ngood."
