Dear Mr. Lee:
I have just made an electroscopic test on a Mrs. Maddinger, who
worked for your concern for eight years. According to my findings
her body contains approximately six micrograms of radium. Her
jaw conditions are just beginning to develop. She seems like a
rather sensible type of girl and one who, if handled properly,
might agree to some settlement without going to law. I examined
her with the understanding that it was not a legal case, but that
I am interested in the diseaseuand want to get all the information
I can about it.
I was wondering if your company and the insurance companies
would like me to feel out the situation and get a release from
her if she receives compensation such as would be allowed by com-
pensation law. of course I would consult the compensation au-
thorities in Jersey to see what allowances are made in that case.
It is just a thought on my part in order to cut down any more
publicity for you people. It may be that I can get the confidence
of these girls and handle their cases like the ones in Connecticut
are handled. I could put out a feeler without mentioning your
company at first.
It is understood that I receive no compensation for this work and
that I am doing it because of my feelings for both your company and
the girls on account of what I consider to be a very unfortunate
position for both and one which calls for extraordinary consideration.
I am going to Waterbury to examin their girls next Wednesday and will
be gone the rest of the week.
.
I might say that there are three or four more girls from your Orange
Plant who want to come over to see me for examinations. I told them
I would be glad to do so with the distinct understanding that they
are not legal cases and that I was not doing it to help them start
any law suit.
