March 19th,1929. Dr. Herman Schlundt, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. Dear Dr. Schlundt: then I returned the instruments to Dr. Flinn yesterday morning, I mentioned to him the irregularity which you noted in your gamia ray roadings at Newark on Sunday, ask- ing if he had hed a similar experience. He stated that he had, and at the time Dr. Ives of the U. S. Dept. of Public Health, was present at the examinations at Waterbury, they experienced similar results. Dr. Ives later advised Dr. Flinn that he had discuased this matter with Dr. 0. H. Gish, whom, as you will recall is associated with the measurement of extremely minute ionization currents, and Dr. Gish advised that they had had similar experiences in their work, attributing the discrepancy to the screening of external radiation from cosmic sources. This would seam to be a satisfactory explana- tion, for after all the Wulf-Hess instrument is very sensitive and it is quite probable that it could be used for messuring such sources of radiation. Dr. Flinn conducts all of his experiments at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, in a room with no external outlets other than the one for entrance, and he states that in that room he never has this difficulty, which of course should be the case in the event that the trouble can be ascribed to cosmic rays, or sources of external radiation emitting from other than radio-active sources. lie trust that your return trip to Missouri was completed without mishap. Very truly yours, Vice President. HHBarker#RH
