Dr. Herman Schlundt,
303 Hichs Ave.,
Columbia,Mo.
Dear Dr. Schlundt:
For the last two days I have been making a rather
strenuous effort to get into communication with you, but have not met
with much success.
A Mr. W.A. Curtis of Ashand, New Hampshire, came
into the office on Wednesday of this week, pretaining to some possible
pitchblend deposits in N.H. and, in talking with Mr. Curtis I found
that he has been taking Radothor off and on for the past three years.
He at one time suffered intense paid from arthritis but gained relief
thru Radothor. He is still badly crippled as a result of arthritis
or rheumatism, but claims that he now suffers no paid and further feels
that the movement of the afflicted joints is continually improving.
All in all he presents a wonderful picture of a man who has devived
benefits with the use of Radothor.
Mr. Curtis is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin
and about your age. He has been associated with the newspaper industry
for the past number of years and seems to be a man of affairs in his
community. I discussed the matter of possible hazards in connection
with the internal use of radium quite freely with Mr. Curtis and told
him that we would be extremely anxious to conduct a few tests to
ascertain the amount of radio-active materials deposited in his sytem
at this time. He seemed entirely agreeable and expressed a thought
that he would be glad if it was possible for him to contribute anything
-2-
in this field.
I first suggested that he get in touch with Dr. Flinn in order that
Dr. Flinn might make gamma ray tests as well as expired air, but I found on call-
ing Dr. Flinn that he is out of town and will not return until Monday of next welsk.
It seems to me that this man offers an opportunity to obtain some very pertinent
data on this subject and, considering the type of scientific data which Dr. Flinn
has collected in the past we feel that we would not got the most to be had by his
handling the case. We, therefore, wish to put up to you the matter of coming to
N.Y. and taking this case under study, such study consisting for the time being of
an examination by gamma ray and expired air methods - further, you can ascertain
whether or not you would desire to have Mr. Curtis forward to you excreta for
examination.
As I visualize the situation there would be no objection to the tests
being made at Dr. Flinn's office, but I do feel that it is extremely important
that you participate in these tests - one of my reasons for this is the fact that
the Committee apparently are not willing to give Dr. Flinn's work much cognizance.
I feel that the data which we would obtain from a case like this is of sufficient
importance that it should be brought to their attention and, that you are in a
position to do this.
Mr. Curtis is remaining in town until Sat. afternoon of this week, and
* was, therefore, in hopes that it would be possible for you to come to N.Y. to
examine him on Friday or Saturday, but due to the delay in getting into communica-
tionwith you I realize that this would be impossible. We have one or two pro-
cedures to follow out at this time - First, Mr. Curtis advises that he is in and
out of N.Y. occasionally and, would be glad to advise us of his next trip here ad,
we could then arrange for you to come on at the same time. The other would be for
you to come on this summer and proceed to Ashland, N.H. and make your study up
there.
There might be some advantage in this procedure for I understand that
-2-
Mr. Curtis has interested others in his community in using Radothor and, it is
quite possible that through Mr. Curtis's cooperation you might examine others.
The U.S.R.Corp. would be glad to pay your expenses in connection with
this work. We trust that you will deem the problem of sufficient interest to
compensate you for your time, for we would hardly feel justified in reimbursing
you for that phase of the situation at the moment.
During my absence Mr. wee will take care of this matter and, will make
any arrangements which will be necessary.
I am very much in hopes that you will see your way clear to come on and
make this investigation this summer You would have an opportunity at the same
time to calibrate the gamma ray machine at Dr. Flinn's office.
In the event that you would care to go up to N.H. to make the study,
arrangements had better be made in advance in order to be assured that Mr.Curtis
would be available. You will find Mr. Curtis a well educated man and a man with
whom you can discuss the subject freely. Inasmuch as you are both Wisconsin
men you should find considerable interest in common.
Sincerely yours,
Vice President.
