Dr. Hermen Schlundt,
University of Missouri,
Columbia, Mo.
Dear Dr. Schlundt:
Your letter of October 25th, celling to our
attention the suggestion of Dr. Hessler, relative to the
determination of the vital capacity, as well as basal metab-
olic state of the girls before administering parathorsone, is
at hand. I shall pass this information along to Dr. Craver,
and as you appreciate the matter of cerrying out this sugges-
tion lies entrely with the Committee.
I also received in this morning's mail copy
of a letter from Rosolie M. Parr, relative to the work which
she has been doing on the treatment of the anemias with
germsnium compounds. The difficulty with this type of
medication in radium cases lies in the fact that about the
time they develop or show signs of anemie the condition is
usually pretty well advanced.
I don't know as we can be of any assistance
to Miss Parr in having the fruits of her work tried out on a
radium case. I shall, however, be glad to keep this in mind
and in case there arises an occasion to treat any of these
girls for anemie condition, it is quite probable that this
type of medication may be used.
In this connection, I
would be glad to have a citation of the reference to the work
done by Miss Parr when same has been published. It is
difficult to get the medical profession to undertake things
of this nature unless they have been officially published in
some reputable medical magazine.
The question came to my nind one day last
week as to what you and Dr. Fialla were doing relative to
publishing the work that you did on the elimination of radium
in two of the five cases. I interpret your letter to mean
that you expect to publish this work very shortly now.
It is my understanding that there is sore
difference of opinion as to the constant of the Wulf type of
gamna ray instrument, as determined by you and as determined
by the J.S.Dept. of Health. I also understand that Dr. Fialla
assisted in the callibration of the instrument of the Dept.
of Health, and I am wondering whether the results he obtained
in this work will influence his attitude relative to your
findings in this connection.
Sincerely yours,
HHBarkertRF
