June 11th,1931. Dr. Herman Schlundt, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. Dear Dr. Schlundt: I spent the forepart of last week discussing the report of the U.S. Department of Health, with thres of the clock companies in connecticut, namely - the New Haven C.ock Co., Waterbury Clock Col, and the E. Ingraham Company. To say the least, these people are very much exercis- ed over the report, and feel that it is not a true portrayal of the picture as found by them. They have little or no faith in the ability of most of the nen assigned to the field work in this investigation. This fact, together with the known discrepancies in the report have given them the tendency to disregard the report as a whole - which I consider very unfortunate. Dr. Thompson is going to have a conference with the manufacturers in New York, some time in the near future, and I hope at that time they will be able to settle their differences amicably. In the meantime the Clock Companies are vory insistent on B. re-examination of the people who were found to be active by the Department, and who the Clock Companies have been advised were not active by Dr. Flinn. In view of ny statistical analysis of the report there are only 11 falling in the controversial class which are pertinent to the situation at present. Seven (7) of the 11 are in my opinion very questionable and probably could not be considered as active. The Clock Companies, I believe, are going to insist upon a re-exemination of this gromp at least, and it was my suggestion that rather than have a joint examination by Dr. Flinn, Mr. Knowles and a third party, that the matter be left entirely in the hands of a disinterested party - and in case the results of the third party agreed with either Mr. Knowles or Dr. Flinn's, they should accept the results in such instances where the two were in accord. Your name has been repeatedly suggested as the logical person to do this work, and I am again informally appealing to you to ascertain whether you would be available in case it is definitely decided to proceed along this line. Sincerely yours, HHBarker:RH Vice President
