DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY
CORNELL UNIVERSITY MEDICAL COLLEGE
FIRST AVENUE AND 28TH STREET
NEW YORK
DEC 10 1931
December 9, 1931.
Mr. H.H. Barker
U.S. Radium Corp.
535 Pearl Street
New York City.
My dear Mr. Barker:
The situation in caring for the radium
cases is complex and unsatisfactory, but Craver and I believe
it is the best we can secure. We think you ought to write to
Dr. Humphries and point out that any unusual expenses which
he incurs should have the approval of Dr. Craver, since this
will prevent duplication and will enable Craver to profit
by the information Dr. Humphries secures.
Thus, we should like to see the X-ray
picture taken of Mrs. Larice, but we did not know it had
been taken.
It is more diplomatic for you to write
Humphries than it is for us. We think the X-ray pictures in
these two cases were advisable since there were definite
symptoms calling for such examination.
Mrs. Larice complained of severe back
pain when we saw her two weeks ago and Craver and I both
advised that she have a corset made, and since her breasts
are pendulous, and she is very fat, we think a brassiere
might also be necessary in fitting the corset. These expenses
were therefore authorized and desirable from the medical
standpoint.
It is extremely annoying to have all
these little charges piled up, and we have warned the
patients to be careful about them. The only solution is
for you to positively decline to pay charges which you think
are unreasonable and we will back you up if we agree.
In the case of Miss Schaub, we have to
deal with a highly eccentric person and I have written her
a very sharp note.
Dr. Craver thinks he ought to see Mrs.
Hussman very soon because she has been unable to come to the
hospital for examination. I think a letter from you to
Humphries would be of assistance.
Sincerely yours,
g
James Ewing.
